Stance Profile

Stance Profile

What is it?

This stat analyses shot speeds categorised by stance — Open, Closed, and Moving — and provides insights into how stance impacts shot performance. For example, higher speeds in the ‘Moving’ stance indicate a player’s ability to hit powerful shots while on the run. Stance usage percentages also highlight player tendencies, such as preferring a Closed stance or excelling in dynamic play.

Why we like it?

This metric adds depth to our understanding of player positioning and movement, illustrating how different stances influence shot quality. It also brings clarity to tactical choices, such as whether a player can generate power while moving or relies on a stable base for their strongest shots.

How it’s calculated?

Stances are determined by the angle between a line drawn from a player feet. For a right handed player the angle is made by drawing a line from the right foot to left foot and comparing the angle it makes with the baseline.

  • Closed stance: Angle less than 110°.
  • Open stance: Angle greater than 110°.
  • Moving stance: Player is moving at 10 KPH or more while hitting the shot.

When we use it?

This stat is ideal for commentary on player tendencies and their ability to adapt during dynamic rallies. It can highlight comparisons, such as Player A hitting forehands faster than Player B while moving or Player B adopting a more Closed stance.
