Serve Profile
What is it?
This stat assesses serve efficiency with four key metrics:
- Leg Drive: Measures the fastest hip speed during the serve, indicating how effectively a player initiates the kinetic chain.
- Fast Arm: Captures the fastest wrist speed during the serve, reflecting the end of the kinetic chain and its influence on racquet head speed.
- Ball Toss Range: Evaluates the consistency of ball toss placement by calculating the variation using the big toe and the peak of the toss in regard to the baseline axis.
- Serve Speed: Overall speed of the serve.
Why we like it?
These metrics break down the mechanics of a serve, highlighting the building blocks of power, disguise, and consistency. They offer a deeper perspective on how a player generates speed and how variations in ball toss can contribute to strategic unpredictability.
How it’s calculated?
Leg Drive: Measures peak hip speed. Fast Arm: Measures peak wrist speed. Ball Toss Range: Calculated using 95% of tosses based on 2 standard deviations from the mean toss position, adjusted using the big toe for different standing locations.
When we use it?
This stat enriches conversations about serve mechanics and their impact on match outcomes. Use it to compare serve efficiency between players or to highlight how specific metrics—like Leg Drive or Ball Toss Range—change during a match.
